Madison Little League Donating Fencing, Foul Poles At Jaycee Field

The new fence and foul poles likely won't be ready for opening day, but should be sometime this season. With information about opening day and how to find out more about Madison Little League.

Scott Murphy, the president of Madison Little League said the organization is donating $10,000 to $12,000 of materials and work to improve Jaycee Field.

The planned improvements include six-foot perimeter fencing, and foul poles. The organization has already donated a dugout and a scoreboard, Murphy told the Board of Selectmen Monday night. Murphy said it was his understanding, from talking with town officials, that the Jaycee Field will be designated as the town's baseball field, "given Griswold," he said, making reference to the town's newest park, which is being built.

"You mean Constitution Park," said First Selectman Fillmore McPherson, smiling. The name of the new park has been a topic of discussion among many in town, some of whom would prefer another name.

"Yes! Sorry, clearly I still have an affinity" for the name by which the field has been known, Murphy said.

Murphy said the six-foot fencing, which will be permanent and made of silver chain-link, will "allow us to host tournaments in a professional way." The field currently is surrounded by temporary snow fencing that has to be fixed frequently, Murphy said.

Murphy said the work will not be ready for opening day on April 27th, but that the organization hopes to have all the work done soon.

The Madison Little League Opening Day parade will start at 11 a.m. on April 27th, and people are asked to meet up at 10:30 a.m., according to the organization's website. Opening day is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. at Jaycee Field. To find out more about Madison Little League and how to get involved, please visit their website.

Town officials said Monday night they do not have a definite opening date yet for Constitution Park, but that work is ongoing.
