Join
us for an evening reflection on the life of Father Henri Nouwen, one of the great spiritual writers of the 20th Century, and a frequent guest at Mercy Center when he was a professor at Yale Divinity School. A Catholic priest and psychologist, Henri's impact continues well into our time through the insights he shared in over forty published books relating his own struggles and joys as a teacher, priest, friend, and most profoundly, the transformative experience of joining the community of L'Arche Daybreak. Henri's life and thought, his struggles and his ability to see Divine Love at the heart of his personal darkness make him a perfect companion for our own personal spiritual journeys.
The program will be led by Dr. Michael W. Higgins, a scholar currently
working on the authorized biography of Henri Nouwen, and a noted retreat
director in Canada and the United States. Michael has recently developed a
three-part series on Henri Nouwen for CBC Radio One; all three hours
may be streamed online by interested listeners. Along with Kevin Burns, Michael W. Higgins co-authored Genius
Born of Anguish: The Life and Legacy of Henri Nouwen, published by Paulist Press in 2012. Michael will use his gifts as a scholar to engage us in a spiritual reflection on what we might learn from the life of Henri Nouwen, a man whose intense suffering nurtured his own hope.
