Part One: How to Start Your Genealogy Quest    Are you new to family history? Have you watched the television program Who Do You Think You Areand found it interesting? Professional genealogist, Michael Spellmon, will show you how to get started in researching your family. The presentation will discuss record keeping, how to start research, establishing goals, and some of the basic types of records a beginner will use for research.

Part Two: My Grandmother Had No Parents: Determining the Maiden Name of Your Female Ancestor  One of the more frustrating aspects of genealogy research is discovering the maiden name of a female ancestor. This presentation helps the beginner determine what records might help in finding this important information. Vital records, published records, funeral home and cemetery records, probate, military pension, naturalization and land records are just some of the record types investigated.

 Michael Spellmon has been a professional genealogist for twenty two years. He has a Master of Arts Degree in History and Master in Library Science Degree. He specializes in Native American genealogy and has worked with tribes in the Federal Recognition process. Spellmon is a member of the Connecticut Professional Genealogists Council, Association of Professional Genealogists, National Genealogy Society and other local organizations. He conducts a Genealogy Club  and teaches a nine part Beginning Genealogy course twice a year at Groton Public Library.
