The truck, which is expected to begin making the rounds on April 1, will allow the family-owned and operated bakery to bring their far beyond the walls of its primarly location at 422 Main Street in East Haven, to locations and events both here in town and throughout the region.

"We can take it anywhere," said Michael DePonte, who is married to Sugar co-owner and head baker Brenda DePonte, who owns the business along with her mother, Carol Vollono. DePonte said most states have several cupcake trucks among their food truck arsenal.

"But in Connecticut, it seems there is only a couple," he said.

And so, the family thought the truck would be a good way to expand the business (without the risk generally associated with opening a new store front), while also serving as vehicle — both literally and figurately — to advertise the business.

"Basically we thought it would be a billboard on wheels for us," DePonte said.

A Family Affair

DePonte noted that his father would soon be retiring from his postal job, which will allow him to also help make the new cupcake truck enterprise a successful one.

"Everybody in the family works here," he said.

"Brenda's grandmother and aunt help out here, as well as her sister-in-law... so, my father will just be another family member helping out, too," he said.

DePonte noted that fact that Sugar is a family affair has been one of the major contributing factor to the bakery's ongoing and increasing success.

"It's just nice to people you love and trust working with you side by side every day," he said.

'In This Together'

DePonted added that about six months ago, after working in the restaurant business for several years, he joined his wife and other family members to work at Sugar Bakery full time.

"Of course, working with your family can at times have its difficulties, but at that same time, it's also very reassuring," he said. "They have a passion and a care about it as much as you — and that's so important."

And DePonte said that family is without a doubt one of the key ingredients to Sugar's continued success.

"It's nice," he said. "We're all in this together."
