Madison Hose Company No. 1, Community Contributor

Madison Hose Company No. 1 is a fully volunteer fire department that originated in 1907. The members proudly provide fire protection and service to downtown Madison, Connecticut, which consists of both residential and business properties. The fire house is centrally located in the heart of downtown Madison which provides us with the fastest response times to all areas as well as mutual aid support to the neighboring towns.

Madison Hose Company No. 1 is a non-profit organization with 35 active members. There are also several exempt members who still participate in the day to day activities which include hands-on training and fire response. The members respond to over 500 calls annually which include; fire fighting, motor vehicle accidents, mutual aid coverage, hazardous materials, boat and water rescue, and a variety of other responses.

The members also participate in a minimum of 2 training exercises a month as well as classes offered around the state and nation for further fire education. Members also participate in weekly activities such as; fire safety education, public service, maintenance of equipment, driver training, maintaining and cleaning the apparatus and the fire house.

These members are extremely dedicated to the fire service and are proud to serve give back to the community and town that they are apart of. Volunteer commitment to the fire company often runs in families, with several generations of the Cooney, Nichols, Landon, Evarts, Dowler, Gulick, Carroll, Kyttle, DeBurra, Lunn, and Schumann families currently on the force. Many of the members today began by enrolling in Madison Hose Company No. 1’s Junior Fire Department at the age of only sixteen. Volunteering for Madison Hose Company No. 1 is a great tradition filled with courage, honor and bravery.

Together, with the team work of the Madison Police Department, Madison Ambulance Association, and the North Madison Fire Department, Madison Hose Company No. 1 is able to provide its community with the best fire service possible.
