Meet Independent Party of Connecticut Presidential Candidate Rocky Anderson in Woodbridge

The Independent Party of Connecticut tonight chose Ross C. “Rocky” Anderson and Luis J. Rodriguez to be their candidates for President and Vice-President of the United States.

The Independent Party of Connecticut tonight chose Ross C. “Rocky” Anderson and Luis J. Rodriguez to be their candidates for President and Vice-President of the United States.

Anderson, former two-term Mayor of Salt Lake City and founder of High Road for Human Rights, was in Waterbury to address the nominating convention. Anderson says, “It is an honor to be chosen by the Independent Party of Connecticut to speak out about the real issues facing the American people. I promise to not join in the Obama-Romney ping-pong game of sidestepping the issues. The American people deserve better.”

Anderson has a long history of standing up and speaking out on the issues:

  • he was the only mayor to call for the impeachment of George W. Bush for abuses of power and violations of our Constitution and international law, including Geneva Convention.
  • has repeatedly spoken out against Obama's signing of the NDAA, which sanctions indefinite detention of U.S. citizens, and against the anti-protest dissent legislation and accelerating prosecutions of whistleblowers by the Obama Administration.
  • endorsed same sex marriage in 1996 and wrote an executive order prohibiting discrimination.
  • reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 31% in city operations and received national and international recognition for his leadership on climate change.
  • as mayor, implemented a city-wide restorative justice program and advocated for an end to the "war on drugs".
  • supported by Ralph Nader, Anderson is committed to driving out the corrupting influence of money in Washington D.C. and accepts no PAC or special interest donations.

Rocky Anderson was named by Business Week as one of the top twenty climate change activists in the world. He served on the Newsweek Global Environmental Leadership Advisory Board, and was recognized by the Human Rights Campaign as one of the top ten straight advocates in the United States for LGBT equality. He received the EPA Climate Protection Award, the Sierra Club Distinguished Service Award, the Respect the Earth Planet Defender Award, and the National Association of Hispanic Publications Presidential Award.

There is more information on Rocky Anderson and his running mate, author and long time Chicano activist, Luis J. Rodriguez at VoteRocky.org

A fundraiser for Rocky will be held at The Winchester Restaurant and Bar in Woodbridge, Wednesday, August 22, 7 pm. The public and media are welcome.
