Madison Cadet Troop 62262 and Bauer Farming Project Coordinator ellen van wees broke ground on an organic pizza garden at Bauer Farm recently.

The 12-footcircular pizza plot is immediately adjacent to our 25' x 40' organic garden.

We are so excited, the pizza garden will be fabulous!

As of right now, we've decided to put in tomatoes, onions, garlic, basil, oregano, summer squash, and peppers. The girls collected rocks to delineate the pizza wedges; we'll put one type of veggie/fruit in each wedge.

ellen suggested we plant marigolds throughout to represent the cheese.  We are looking forward to a glorious pizza party at harvest time

Our organic gardens are going to receive a lot of attention from the troop this month.  We are going to Bauer after school every Friday in March to spread and rake top soil, compost and, hopefully, manure on both beds.  Madison Earth Care and Running Brook Farms in Killingworth have generously agreed to both donate and deliver organic top soil and compost.  We'd love to find another generous donor of aged manure.

We will also form our raised beds and create the walkways within both garden plots.  We're planning on starting some of the hardier seeds this month.  Next month will be our be germinating month.
