Our Girls Are Making Their Garden Grow!

It was a tough spring full of hard work, but is it ever paying off. And, instead of the taking the summer off, they're putting in some more work on the garden. The veggies will be donated to Madison Food Pantry, and a party is planned!

Here are some photos of our amazing garden at Bauer.  These photos were taken two weeks ago and I know everything has gotten only bigger and better since then!

Our scout troop, which includes rising 8th graders at Polson Middle School, took on the Bauer Organic Garden Project last fall, under the supervision of Bauer Educator, ellen van wees.  Each girl made a 50 hour commitment to work on the garden and garden related projects in order to earn their Girl Scout Silver Award.

It was a tough spring; helping ellen break ground, fertilizing, composting, mulching, forming the beds, germinating the seeds and planting, was hard work.  During the months of March, April and May, the girls walked to Bauer after school and put in several hours of hard labor.

The results were worth it.  ellen's garden design is gorgeous; the beds are both interesting and colorful!  The girls are particularly attached to the pizza garden they created.  We're planning to have a pizza party there at harvest time and celebrate their silver award.

At present, each member of the troop has committed to weeding, watering and picking (the veggies we grow are donated to the Madison Food Pantry) every day during the summer months.  This is a departure from our usual summer girl scout hiatus in activities.  The girls have been wonderfully enthusiastic and remain committed to the garden, despite the heat!

Our girls are presently working with local artist, Patrick Ganino (a troop member's dad...lucky for us!) designing and painting what will definitely be a magnificent mural for the Bauer Classroom!  I'll be keeping you posted.
