Madison Remembers

A memorial service Wednesday honored those who died on Sept. 11, 2001. Did you do some volunteer work this week as part of the "Days of Caring?" Let us know in the comment section below.

In a touching tribute to those who were lost on Sept. 11, 2012 during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, there was a ceremony of remembrance on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013 in front of Memorial Town Hall.

The ceremony featured relatives of the four people with ties to Madison who perished. The Madison people who died that day included Dianne Bullis-Snyder, Anthony Demas, Peter Gelinas, and Robert Peraza. They were among 2,753 people who died, a toll that included including 343 firefighters and paramedics, and 23 NYPD police officers.

Town officials have declared this week "Days Of Caring," and citizens are asked to volunteer or contribute to a worthy cause in honor of those who died.

Already, the town's teenagers have stepped forward. Members of the Excel and Interact Clubs at Daniel Hand High School organized a food drive that brought more than 1,300 pounds of food and hundreds of dollars to the town's food pantry, where some shelves were bare

Community Volunteer Pam McKinnon was thanked by the town's Board of Selectmen earlier this week for her work on the "Days of Caring."

Also, members of the Women's Club of Madison, led by volunteer Barbara DeRosa have donated 109 hand knit Afghan blankets to Village of Families and Children in Hartford, CT and to the Madison Police Department.

For those who are looking for a good cause, Pam McKinnon recommended the town's food bank. The Food Pantry is on Orchard Park Road, Building 50, Units 3 and 4. Donations can be dropped off on Tuesdays, or can be dropped off in downtown Madison at the William Raveis Real Estate Office at 709 Boston Post Rd, Madison. The phone number at William Ravies is (203) 421-4998.

She also said people might want to consider doing something as simple as connecting with an elderly neighbor, getting to know them, and finding a way to help them.
