The will hold their 12th annual Plant and Shrub Sale at Hammonasset Beach State Park beginning May 9th and running until June 3rd , or until the plants and shrubs are sold out.
The sale, which has been very successful each year, funds a wide range of important programs at the state-owned park, which is visited by more than a million visitors each summer.
Donald Rankin, of Friends of Hammonasset, said the group has committed to providing funds for the exhibit in a new nature center that will be built near the present facility. FOH also has been purchasing materials for park restoration efforts.

"We provide for purchasing of materials for park projects like the recent planting of 24,000 culms of American Dune grass to restore the sand dunes in West Beach. In addition to purchasing the culms the Friends purchased the snow fencing and organized 70 volunteers to plant the grass plugs," Rankin said. "We invested $10,000 in exercise equipment and swing sets in the campground."
FOH also sponsors festivals, like one scheduled for this year on October 6 and 7 that will feature musical performances, nature programs and the New England Atlatl Championships. "The World Atlatl Championships will be part of the Hammonassett Festival so competitors from around the globe will be traveling to Madison to compete in this special event," Rankin said.
The plant and shrub sale will feature a large variety of premium hanging baskets, perennials, and, if the weather is warm enough, 4 inch annuals and flats of bedding plants and vegetables.
The location of the sale will be .3 miles east of the main entrance to Hammonasset Beach State Park on Rte 1. Gardeners are invited to support the sale by bringing potted perennials from their own gardens during the sale from 9am-5pm daily, 7 days a week.
