Metro-North New Haven Trains Operating At Reduced Speeds Due To Heat. You Should Too.

Here is a list of free places to go nearby if you need to beat the heat. Options in Madison include town hall on Campus Drive, the Senior Center on Bradley Road, and the Scranton Memorial Library.

 

Metro-North Railroad, which operates trains in and out of Madison, says it is operating at reduced speeds Thursday, according to a Twitter post:

Due to high temps/the potential impact on our catenary system, New Haven trains are operating @ reduced speeds which may result in delays.

A catenary system is a system of overhead wires that provide electricity to locomotives.

People who are looking for an air conditioned place to go in Madison can go to at 8 Campus Drive off of Duck Hole Road, just north of the Hammonasset Connector, or the Senior Center at 29 Bradley Road, close to downtown, says First Selectman Fillmore McPherson.

They also can go to Scranton Library, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. The librarians there say they are happy to have people stop by, cool off and, if they'd like, check out summer reading options at the same time. The Scranton Library is in downtown Madison, at the corner of the Boston Post Road and Wall Street.

In Guilford, the air conditioned library is open Thursday until 8 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located at 67 Park Street in Guilford, right next to the Guilford town green.

Town hall in Clinton, next to Madison, has been opened for people who are suffering from the heat. :

Is your house dangerously warm? With not an ice cube's chance of relief in sight for today's temperatures, Clinton First Selectman Willie Fritz encouraged any residents in need of a "cool" room to come to . The "Rose Room" at town hall will be available to residents needing to beat the heat. It is located downstairs on the lower level and is rose-colored. Bring a cool beverage and a book or magazine from home. There are plenty of tables and chairs to sit and cool down.

Cooling centers , both close to North Madison, for residents looking to escape the heat and humidity. The cooling centers will remain open through Thursday and possibly into Friday.

The National Weather Service says that a heat advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. for Madison and all of southern Connecticut. The NWS says that heat index values will be at or over 100 degrees this afternoon.

"These expected heat indices will result in dangerous conditions for those spending prolonged periods of time outdoors," the NWS says. "A heat advisory is expected to make it feel like it is 100 to 104 degrees for two consecutive hours. Take extra precautions if you work of spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening."  

The NWS also recommended the people know the signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

"Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. To reduce risk during outdoor work the Occupantional Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, call 911."

Connecticut Public Safety also recommended that people call elderly friends and neighbors to check to see that they are OK.

Friday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before midnight. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. Light northeast wind. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Northwest wind between 3 and 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 62.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 83.
