Tigers To Face Their Toughest Test Yet

The Daniel Hand Football Team travels to Meriden tonight at 7 p.m. to take on the Cheshire Rams. Patch Player of the Week: Henry Foye!

For the first three games of this season the Tigers have scored on their opponents early and often.  So much so that Coach Filippone has had to give consideration to slow things down in the second half so that his team does not violate the CIAC’s “Score Management Policy.”

This rule states that if a team wins by more than fifty points, then the head coach will face a review and possible suspension for the next week, unless it can be shown that the coach made concerted efforts to not deliberately run up the score. These efforts include replacing starters and not passing or running trick plays.  In extreme cases some Connecticut coaches have resorted to punting the ball back to the opponent on first down or “taking a knee.”

Needless to say this controversial rule generates a great deal of passionate comment in the blogs and sports pages.

It does not appear likely that Coach Filippone will be worrying about the score management policy this week.

The Tigers will open their SCC Division I East schedule on an unfamiliar night (Thursday) at an unfamiliar field (Falcon Field, Meriden) against a very familiar opponent (Cheshire Rams). The Rams are familiar because they are practically a mirror image of the Tigers.   Both teams run an up-tempo spread offense.  Both teams have great talent, depth and skill.   Last year Hand held on for a 14-13 win at the Surf Club.

The Rams are 2-1 after losing their first game of the year last week 42-20 against the number one ranked team in the state, the Xavier Falcons.  Cheshire had previously defeated Hamden and Hillhouse.

This is technically a home game for Cheshire, but construction of the new artificial turf and track at the Maclary Complex is not complete, so the game was moved to Falcon Field.  Many games in the area were moved to Thursday night to accommodate the Jewish Holiday on Friday.

Patch Player of the Week

Even though he only played in the first half, quarterback Henry Foye completed  15 of 24 passes for 206 yards and four touchdowns!  He couldn’t have done it without the outstanding protection from his offensive line and great receivers including 2 TDs caught by Tyler Riccio.

Around the SCC

The game of the week is at Falcon Field.  Coach George DeMaio will be broadcasting live on 960 WELI and also on the internet.  In other action on Friday, it’s the battle of West Haven as West Haven HS travels to Notre Dame WH at 7 p.m.
