Tigers Complete Undefeated Season With 40-15 Win Over Guilford [VIDEO]

The Daniel Hand Football Team finishes their regular season with a 10-0 record. The win also clinches a home playoff game at the Surf Club Tuesday night.

With ten minutes to go in the first half, the Tigers found themselves in an unusual position; trailing Guilford 7-6.  It began to look like the momentum was going to swing Guilford's way, when on the next play from scrimmage after the Guilford touchdown, Hand fumbled the ball back to them.  But it was at this point that the Indians momentum tank went dry.  On Guilford's first play from scrimmage after the fumble recovery, the ball came loose and was batted around a few times before Matt Walsh picked it up and ran it in for a touchdown to return the lead to Hand 12-7.  Hand then scored 28 unanswered points before turning the game over to the jayvees with about 6 minutes left in the third quarter.

The game had its share of big plays.  On the next Hand series after Walsh's fumble recovery and touchdown, Kevin Frey burst through the center of the line and outran the Guiford defense for an 80 yard touchdown.  Just before the half, a long reception by Nick Vitale gave Hand a first and goal from the 4 yard line.  Hand then changed from their spread offense to a power running look with a 6-1, 290 lb fullback named Joe Demichele.  Demichele carried the pile to the end zone on the next play and then did it again for the 2 point conversion, the first successful PAT of the night.  Hand led 26-7 at the half.

In the third quarter, Henry Foye connected with Nick Vitale for a 46 yard touchdown pass.  On the next series Foye pitched the ball to wide receiver, Tyler Riccio, on what looked like an end around play, but instead Riccio stopped and threw a 35 yard touchdown pass to Vitale.  That made the score 40-7.  Guilford scored one more time in the fouth quartet to make the final 40-15.

After the game Coach Filippone noted that this was the eighth team in Hand history to finish a regular season undefeated.  The team will now have to wait for the results of all the Thanksgiving games to see who their next opponent will be on Tuesday night.
