Hand Will Try to Cross Off Another Obstacle on Their Way to 6-0

The Daniel Hand Football Tigers (5-0) travel to New Haven today for an afternoon game against Wilbur Cross (1-3) at 3:00 p.m.

The Tigers remain unbeaten at the halfway mark of the regular season and SCC Division I East schedule.  The Wilbur Cross Athletic Complex does not have lighting, so the game will be moved up to 3 p.m. to try and get it in before dark.

Wilbur Cross has been struggling this year with a 1-3 record.  Their losses include two lopsided contests from teams that Hand has already beaten.  Cross lost to Fairfield Prep 35-18 and Cheshire 46-6.  So at least, on paper anyways, this is one of those games that Hand is supposed to win.  But… you never know?  Cross always has talented athletes and they have a good coach in John Aquavita, who won several State Championships at Hyde.   But realistically, as long as the Tigers don’t give anything away today, they should be OK.

The Tigers faced their first challenge of the season last week and their first deficit on the scoreboard.  Notre Dame was in the lead 14-7 at the half.  The Tigers responded with 17 unanswered points to pull out a 24-14 win.  That was a great team effort but one player stood out.  Junior receiver Kyle Anderson made several key receptions in the second half to keep drives alive and none were better than his one-handed diving grasp (as he has being held by a defender) in the end zone for the go ahead touchdown.  Film of that catch will have to be forwarded to the archives for the day when some future filmmaker decides to produce “Tiger Pride II, the Sequel.”

If anyone is interested in a Friday night double-header there are a few good options with: Cheshire at West Haven, Xavier at Shelton and North Haven at Notre Dame.  All three games are at 7 p.m.

There are two SCC teams currently ranked in the ESPNBoston.com’s New England Top Ten.  Xavier is at #5 and Daniel Hand makes an appearance at #7.
