Discover the Magic of Matcha

If you haven't discovered the incredibly versatile, anti-oxidant rich matcha powder, now's the time!

I was recently given a sip of my friend’s green tea latte from Starbucks and very quickly became obsessed with the bright green drink. I did my research to find that the latte is made from matcha green tea powder.

(I do have to say that after making my own green tea lattes at home, I no longer enjoy the product offered at Starbucks. I learned that they add melon flavoring to their drink which takes away from the green tea flavor that I love so much.)

The reason I want to share this product with the world is not only because of the flavor, but for its incredible health benefits. We have all heard about how healthy green tea is; imagine a green tea product that is ten times more powerful than the green tea we are used to!

What is matcha? It is a powder made from green tea leaves. When the leaves are picked, they are steamed, dried, and then ground into a fine powder. Because the powder contains the entire leaf, it is packed with many more nutrients than steeping green tea leaves in hot water.

The health benefits of matcha powder include: ten times the antioxidants as regular green tea (7 times that of dark chocolate, and 17 times that of blueberries); contains catechins that fight against carcinogens; contains L-Theanine which promotes a stage of relaxation and boosts your energy without the jitters or crash of caffeine; boosts metabolism; and is a powerful detoxifier.

How can you get your daily dose? I like to make my own iced lattes by mixing a tablespoon of matcha powder with 12 oz of milk and sweetener to taste. Matcha can also be mixed with hot water to make tea, added into smoothies, or baked into your favorite treats. I recently experimented with making a matcha ice cream, and I must say, it is delicious!

Also be sure to come by the Wharf and try my Matcha Green Tea Cake with chocolate ganache, vanilla buttercream, matcha ganache, and sesame seed brittle, available on my new dessert menu. You can’t miss the opportunity to indulge in a dessert that contributes to your well-being
