Explore the tide pools at West Wharf Beach in Madison and see what lives in this ever changing environment.  Observe how animals move, eat and protect themselves as we explore what adaptations they have in order to survive. We will discover the similarities and differences in the animals we have found and become “junior taxonomists” by considering how they might fit into the groups of the classification system.  Meet on the rocks at West Wharf Beach. Wear water shoes.  Ages 10 - 12.  $9.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A HONEY BEE

Wednesday, October 10 or 17

9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Insects are amazing and complex creatures, some even live in social situations like our own.  We will take a look into a day in the life of a honey bee, examining their life cycle while learning the role each bee has in the hive.  Learn how bees communicate and compare your community to that of the honey bee.  Consider the different ways that honey bees help humans and benefit the environment. You might find that we have more in common than you think!  Ages 12-14.  $11

SKETCHING FROM NATURE

Tuesday, November 6 or Wednesday, December 5

9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Field sketches are quick drawings usually created by pencil and paper that are used by artists as studies for later works of art.  We will look through the collections of local animals in the classroom at Bauer Park and talk about characteristics specific to each group.  Each student will then choose one specimen to closely examine and learn how to do a series of quick drawings that capture the essence of your subject.  Ages 10 - 12.  $12
