Congratulations to Carlin and her advisor, Frank Barron!

DHHS student Carlin McCarthy has taken the top prize in the individual writing category, Grades 9 through 12, in Scholastic’s Student Journalism Contest, Madison School Superintendent Thomas Scarice said Monday.

"This is a very prestigious award," Scarice said, who added that he is proud of both McCarthy and her advisor, Frank Barron, a DHHS teacher and an advisor to the student newspaper, The Hand Print.
Linda Swank, an awards associate and board liaison for Scholastic said the judges were "incredibly impressed" with McCarthy's work.

"We're thrilled to announce that Carlin has won Scholastic's Student Journalism Contest," Swank said in an email to the school and to Barron. "Formerly Weekly Reader's Student Publishing Contest, this prestigious affair honors the nation's best nonfiction writing by students in grades 3-12 ... The judges were incredibly impressed with what they read! .. Congratulations to Carlin and thanks to you for encouraging entry into the competition!"
In addition to writing for her student newspaper, McCarthy was editor of The Hand Print. She also has written for several of her hometown newspapers, including Madison Patch and The Source, where she wrote news stories and a column about Madison.
