Island Avenue Celebrates Hispanic Culture Week Leading Up to Cinco de Mayo

Mariachi band helps kickoff weeklong celebration of Hispanic culture

Kicking off Hispanic Culture Week at Island Avenue School was a performance by Fiesta del Norte. The focus was "Cinco de Mayo" and the Mariachi band played traditional music of Mexico and other Latin American countries, plus some sing-alongs with the students.  The upbeat music and enthusiastic band members helped everyone get in the spirit.

Through this week all grades will be engaged in cultural activities in each of their specialties.  The goal is to increase cultural awareness, interest and exposure across the disciplines: Spanish, Physical Education, Music, Art and Library.

The celebration will culminate with an outdoor celebration of Zumba dance, coinciding with ACES Day (All Children Exercise Simultaneously).

The Fiesta del Norte performance was thanks to the generosity of the PTO’s Cultural Arts Committee.
