Amid reported political rancor, the state House in the wee hours of the morning today agreed that undocumented immigrants can get a Connecticut driver's license.

As the sun was rising, the House voted 74 to 55 on the measure, according to the Connecticut Mirror website.  Most voting in favor of the bill were Democrats while Republicans largely opposed the measure.

Madison's State Rep. Noreen Kokoruda (R) voted against the measure, according to the CGA website.

Earlier in the day the House voted 132-0 in favor of a bill that would limit how state and local police officers can hold illegal immigrants for deportation, the website reports.

The Senate, where Democrats hold a clear majority, votes next on both bills. If they pass, and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signs them into law, Connecticut would join a small number of states to allow licenses to undocumented immigrants. Malloy has said he supports the license measure.

The state's Office of Legislative Research estimates that 54,000 immigrants could obtain licenses under the bill over the next three years, the Mirror reports.

Thank you for standing up for us Noreen. Given that a CT driver's license can be shown as ID to vote, does anyone know if this means that those voting in favor of the bill in Hartford recognize that illegal aliens in CT could use the license to vote. It appears to me to be disenfrachisement... CT citizens lose as it will no longer be one man, one vote.

Also, did the state make it legal and required for illegal aliens to buy car insurance, are they now required to serve on jury duty, etc?
Charles May 24, 2013 at 02:08 PM
So they will be required to pass a drivers test, get the training, have insurance and follow the laws of the road. Seems like that would be safer? I guess since Republicans only represent older white people of course they would be against this. And Daria, after your pathetic showing in last years elections, you shouldn't look down your nose at hispanics and other immigramts, they could be a future voting block. Oh wait, the Tea Party only allows white people in.
Matt May 24, 2013 at 06:21 PM
Charles, all of that is already required by law. And they don't care about that law now. Why on earth would they magically start caring about it now? This is almost as stupid as believing that criminals will turn in guns that are now banned simply because they're illegal.
Charles May 24, 2013 at 09:21 PM
so immigrants don't care about the law? really, that's not racist or hateful at all. Was Adam Lanza and his Mom criminals? They were able to buy weapons. wrong side again Matt. You should just complain that the ambulance building isn't accessable or that the ambulance is old.
Matt May 24, 2013 at 09:45 PM
Charles, not a single sentence in your latest reply is even remotely accurate. The illegal immigrants driving around with no license, no insurance, and no registration clearly do not care about the law now. Or they wouldn't be driving with no license, insurance, and registration. Your accusation of racism is absurd, though not surprising you'd throw that out there. Adam Lanza was nuts. He's now a dead crazy criminal. Not sure what that has to do with anything. If that is supposed to imply that criminals will stop using illegal guns now that there is a new law, it makes no sense. Not sure what the ambulance building accessibility or ambulance age has to do with anything. I've never complained about either of those things so maybe you should try getting your disconnected accusations straight before commenting.

Why would they follow the law? Thyere here ILLEGALLY. The laws are not enforced against them anyways. See: Arizona. The best thing for them is it will be really easy for them to get guns- illegally- and hurt or kill people while robbing homes, banks, etc. because gun LAWS apply only to law abiding citizens. Since they're undocumented, we'll have a really great time trying to find out who they are. It's all a great plan.
Samantha Pullaro May 25, 2013 at 06:26 AM
I think anyone should live in this country- legally. How about streamlining the bureaucratic legalization process?
Charles May 25, 2013 at 06:49 AM
@Samantha, do you really think that all immigrants are here illegally? Thank you for portraying the rich Madison snob that dislikes people that are not so worthy to you highness and wealth. You pay more in taxes than many people make in a year. Your comments are offensive. Many immigrants in our town work very hard and have families that they are trying to support. Typical spa lady in Madison. "tsk, tsk poor people stay north of Rt 1"

If we handled the immigration issue properly this would be an unnecessary action. It only provides more tax revenue and information for the data bank on people that have no need to comply.
Matt May 25, 2013 at 11:17 AM
Charles, You have once again made up things that Samantha didn't say. This entire conversation is about illegal immigrants. It has nothing to do with legal ones. Please drop this BS line about assuming all immigrants are illegal. Nobody is saying or implying that. And the conversation has nothing to do with it. It is about the illegal ones. End of story. I realize that you (whoever you really are), probably don't have the ability to comment in a rational and truthful manner, since you never have. But it would be nice to try.

Here is an interesting article about the different terms being used in the discussion of this issue. http://civilliberty.about.com/od/immigrantsrights/qt/illegal_undoc.htm
BL Davis May 25, 2013 at 01:31 PM
Charles, where did you get the idea that illegal workers pay more taxes than legal workers? Many illegals work as maids and nannies and caregivers at less than minimum wages and with no benefits and for employers who do not cover withholding taxes or othere federal and state deductions.
Charles May 25, 2013 at 02:06 PM
@BL my comment was (see above) that Mrs. Pullaro may pay more in taxes than many immigrants make in a year. BUt I do find you comment about "illegals" being maids, nannies and caregivers offensive. Are you saying all immigrants can do is meanial labor for cash under the table? Hardly.
Charles May 25, 2013 at 02:09 PM
@Matt, your posts ove the years show you to be a just a plain old bigot. But I'll come down to your level. Not all immigrants are illegal. Many work very hard, support families and are members of our society at large. Allowing the mto get drivers licenses and come out of the shadows and drive with proper training and insurance is a good thing. (can't wait for your ad hominem insult)
Matt May 25, 2013 at 03:44 PM
Charles, You are apparently thinking of someone else. You will not find a single bigoted or racist comment on Patch from me. There are of course people who are. I am not one of them. You're confusing the people you argue with / insult. Also, you continue to accuse me of calling all immigrants illegal, which for the fourth time, has never once been said. Nothing in this topic is in reference to legal immigrants. It is about illegals only. At some point, I hope you will actually read what someone says, comprehend it, and then respond with an intelligent thought that isn't a personal attack.
Samantha Pullaro May 25, 2013 at 06:26 PM
Charles- I am curious. What makes you think I pay more in taxes... And more than who???? Are you stalking me? I bet you work for the IRS and target anyone with a name that has A and T in it... Like "tea" party!!! OMG! You totally make my day!!!! Ok. I can't comment anymore. Have a nice Memorial Day weekend everyone!
Jon May 28, 2013 at 09:49 AM
Charles is a pathetic loser, pay no attention to him. He probably held hands with the Boston bombers letting them in the country every time the wanted back in. Obviously he has NO concept of security. He is probably a union crybaby, whining about rights of all people, even those who want to destroy the American way of life.
Charles May 28, 2013 at 10:49 AM
@Jon, such harsh uneducated words. I have lived and worked in this community for nearly 30 years. I am not sure if you and your partner have children, but I can bet you I was there coaching them, tutoring then at the library, cheering them from the sidelines and probably helping them. You can be anti American all you want but it just makes people think you're a bigot. Now that's hipocracy, right?
Matt May 28, 2013 at 12:47 PM
Charles, I do not agree with Jon's method, as the name calling doesn't accomplish anything. However, as usual, nothing you responded with has anything remotely to do with the topic or with what Jon said. And you have once again started calling someone a bigot with no actual basis. Since you are constantly making comments that attack other people, and lately those attacks don't even make sense, you might want to slow down and read before posting future comments and personal attacks.
