Kokoruda States Opposition To Gov. Malloy's Proposed Budget

Kokoruda Running For Open State Representative Seat

Noreen Kokoruda, a candidate for the 101st District seat that is currently open, said in a prepared release that she was startled by the news that Governor Dannel Malloy intends to propose a $1.5 Billion tax increase in his address scheduled for Wednesday, Feb 16 at noon.

“So many towns, businesses and families are suffering and the only solution  our state government has offered in recent years is to raise taxes.  Government is too big and too inefficient.  We must cut our bloated state government before talking about tax hikes,” Kokoruda said in the release.

Malloy is currently proposing $1.5 Billion in taxes and $2 Billion in cuts, Kokoruda said.  "The governor spoke of shared sacrifice in his opening address, and this preview of his first budget is far from that," she said.

Kokoruda, who serves on the Madison Board of Selectmen, said she has held Madison’s local budget to a higher standard in her time on the Board of Selectmen.

"We simply cannot afford this much government," she stated. "I believe that we can spend no more than we make, and borrow no more than we can afford to pay back. If elected, I will make this same common sense commitment to the residents of Madison and Guilford."

Kokoruda said in the prepared release that she looks forward to the opportunity to work with the governor’s office and legislators on both sides of the aisle to find a better solution to Connecticut’s budget crisis.

The 101st district was left open when Deb Heinrich resigned in early January to take a new cabinet-level position with Gov. Malloy's administration as liaison to the state's not-for-profit community.

The special election will be Feb. 22nd. The election will be held at the regular polling places, which are as follows:

  • DISTRICT 1: Surf Club Building, 87 Surf Club Road, Madison.  All registered voters who live at properties on the even numbered side of Green Hill Road and south.
  • DISTRICT 2: Dr. Robert H. Brown Middle School, 980 Durham Road, Madison. All registered voters who live at properties on the odd numbered side of Green Hill Road and north.

More information about the process, and a link to a voter registration form, can be found on the Madison Registrar's Office website.
