State Police Plan To Celebrate Super Bowl ...

... by setting up extra patrols. Here's what you need to know ...

The State Police Traffic Services Unit, supported by State Police Patrol Troopers, will be out in full force beginning Thursday evening, as we prepare for this historically busy Super Bowl weekend.  Troopers will be conducting roving DUI patrols, each conducted in an effort to identify and apprehend intoxicated motor vehicle operators.

State Police personnel will be deployed to areas that are heavily traveled as they actively seek out and identify those individuals that are operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor and or drugs, in furthering efforts to ensure this a safe, enjoyable weekend for all citizens and visitors traveling the Connecticut highways.

On many occasions state police have set up DUI patrols on Route 17 in Durham and Route 66 in Middlefield, although specific locations have not been announced.

As the excitement and hype of the Super Bowl gets into full swing, one thing that may not be on people’s minds is buzzed driving.  However, over 10,000 people were killed in 2010 in alcohol-impaired vehicle crashes.  A buzzed driving accident can happen to anyone, anywhere, no matter which team they are rooting for.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are continuing their Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving campaign during this weekend. They remind everyone that getting pulled over for Buzzed Driving could cost you $10,000 in legal fees, court costs, and increased insurance rates. Here are five easy tips to help prevent buzzed driving:

  1. Before drinking, designate a sober driver
  2. If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation so you are sure to get home safely. For rides starting and ending in Guilford, Madison, and Clinton, you can call Shoreline Taxi: (203) 506 - TAXI (8294). United Cab Co serves the Durham area: (860) 547-1602. Put those numbers in your cell phone so you have them when you need them!
  3. Use your community’s sober ride program if it is available
  4. If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate, contact your local law enforcement
  5. Remember, Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving. If you know people who are about to drive or ride with someone who is impaired, take the driver’s keys and help them make other arrangements to get their destination  safely
