A Fairfield University student was charged with sexual assault Thursday after a two-month long investigation into allegations he sexually assaulted and injured a female student.

Josua Delvecchio, 19, of Madison, was charged at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 2 with first-degree sexual assault, first-degree unlawful restraint and third-degree assault.

According to Fairfield Police, an 18-year-old female student reported to officers that someone previously unknown to her had sexually assaulted her on campus in October 2013. The victim sought treatment at a local hospital and was treated for injuries.

During the two-month long investigation evidence was examined and witnesses were interviewed, which supported the victim’s complaint, according to police.

Some of the evidence in the investigation included electronic communication that Delvecchio engaged in with other students, police said. Other evidence was gathered with the assistance and cooperation of Fairfield University Public Safety and Administrators.

During the investigation, Delvecchio was reportedly deceptive when questioned about the incident, but forensic evidence was able to refute his statement of events as to what transpired, according to police.

Police said Fairfield University students have been advised that a sexual assault on campus had occurred and were told to take precautions. In addition, Delvecchio was removed from campus pending their investigation.

Delvecchio was released on $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 10.
