Jeffrey School Parents Receive Email Following Incident

Additional security measures planned, as precautionary measure only. No imminent threat detected.

Parents of students at Jeffrey Elementary School received a letter Friday from school staff reassuring them following an unsettling incident at the school.

The letter, sent to Madison Patch by a parent who was interested in learning if a police presence or security at the school would be increased, is below. Principal Kathryn Hart on Monday morning referred questions to Madison Public School Superintendent Thomas Scarice.

Scarice referred all questions to the Madison Police regarding the investigation. He added that school officials were told by Madison police Friday that there was no need to go into a lockdown after the information was discovered.

Madison Police Commander John J. Rich said Monday that police are investigating the incident and are making sure there is sufficient security at the school.

"The Madison police are actively investigating the incident, we are attempting to determine the origin of the written material," Rich said. "As the investigation is ongoing, there will be an increased police presence and attention to Jeffrey School, and the surrounding area."

Rich said that there is no information that would indicate there is an imminent threat, and that the increased police presence and security is intended as a precaution.

"We will continue to evaluate it going forward," he said. "We obviously understand the concern of all parents when it comes to the safety of their children."

Here is a copy of the letter sent Friday afternoon, May 3, 2013:

Dear Parents,

Over the past few months, we have taken many measures to increase school security and student safety.

Today, I want you to be aware that an incident occurred at Jeffrey School that prompted us to ask for police assistance.

A note was found on the school playground with some violent language.  Madison Police immediately responded to the school upon being alerted to the discovery of the written material.

Police made a physical search of the grounds and found no threats or items of concern.  They advised us to continue our normal routines and activities.  At no time was any student in danger.

I appreciate the ongoing support and collaboration between the Madison Public Schools and Madison Police Department.

Sincerely,

Kathryn Hart Principal
