Madison Police Officer Joseph Race And Madison Dispatcher Todd Nelson Raising Money For Special Olympics At Penguin Plunge Saturday; Their Team Is One Of Many From The Town

Madison Police Officer Joseph Race and Madison Dispatcher Todd Nelson are helping raise money for the Special Olympics by taking the plunge Saturday into the frigid waters of Long Island Sound as part of the Penguin Plunge.

Race, calling Nelson a "superstar fundraiser," said Nelson raised most of his money using social media, including Facebook. You can find out more about the plunge, and support Race and Nelson, or any of the other plungers, at the Madison Penguin Plunge web page.

Registration and the festivities begin around 10 a.m. at The Plunge itself is at noon. The Madison Police Department team is one of many from Madison. The overall goal for the Madison Plunge is $50,000 and so far only $30,266.35 has been raised so there's still plenty of room, and time, to help out.

The top fundraisers so far for the Madison Plunge, as recorded on the Special Olympics Connecticut site, are Michael Pendell, John Hansen, Matthew Saccoman, Patrick Morrissey, and T.J. Anderson.

Race said it's his understanding that a group of Daniel Hand High School Students will be participating and are working hard to raise money as well. He said they will be dressed as pirates. He did not think it would be appropriate for members of the Madison Police Department to be dressed as pirates.
