Heavy Vehicle Extrication Focus Of Weekend Training Class For Volunteer Firefighters

What did you do this past weekend? Our volunteer firefighters spent their time further honing their skills so that they will be prepared in case of a bad accident involving a heavy vehicle. Check it out.

From North Madison Volunteer Fire Co. Facebook page:

This past weekend, members from North Madison Fire and Madison Hose Co. No. 1 participated in a training exercise highlighting Heavy Vehicle Extrication.

This class was hosted by the Guilford Fire Department ( Guilford Professional Firefighters Local4177 ) and was taught by Captain Robert Morris from Rescue Company 1 FDNY, and current Rescue 1 FDNY firefighters.

Heavy extrication deals mainly with extrication techniques required for heavy vehicles, other than basic procedures such as removing a door or window. Heavy vehicles include buses, semi-tractor trailers, dump trucks, concrete mixers, and tanker trucks which were used for the training.

The class highlighted techniques such as atypical access, the need for stabilizing vehicles as well as the site, use of heavy lifting, rescues from cars under trucks, and rollovers.

By using a combination of cribbing, hydraulic jacks, winches, lifting airbags, struts and chains, students were able to control the trucks and safely extricate the victims involved in the scenario.
