Firefighters Beat Back Fire On Old Post Road

Madison Hose Co. No 1 volunteer firefighters and other emergency responders were called to the scene of a fire at Old Post Road, off of the Boston Post Road Monday afternoon around 4 p.m.

According to one bystander, who asked not to be named, there was a downed line in addition to the fire. Once CL&P arrived on the scene and secured the live wire, the fire was quickly extinguished, she said.

The bystander said she arrived on the scene at about 3:46 p.m., which she thinks was about ten minutes after the fire was discovered. The live wire was jumping and sparking, she said.

Madison Hose Co. No. 1 Fire Chief Bob Kyttle said that the Madison Fire Marshal is still investigating, but that it appears from preliminary reports that a commercial box truck in a driveway caught fire. "It was burning in the driveway," he said.

The fire was underneath a power line, and the fire burnt through the power line and it fell on top of the truck, Kyttle said. "So we had to wait for CL&P to shut off the power. Once the power was shut off, we extinguished the truck fire and the fire in the surrounding brush," Kyttle said.

The Madison resident who was on the scene said the CL&P crew arrived around 3:59 p.m. and, after the wire was secured, the fire was extinguished by the volunteer firefighters by 4:07 p.m.

Kyttle said the scene has been turned over to the Madison Fire Marshal, and that the state Department of Energy & Environmental Protection has been notified about water runoff into the storm drains.
