Dog Drowning At Hammonasset Rescued
After receiving a report of a dog drowning in a culvert near Beach Road and S Street in the campground, Madison Hose Co. No. 1 arrives on the scene to find the tide higher than normal, the current moving rapidly, and a dog stuck between some rocks.
Madison Hose Co. No. 1 received a call about a dog drowning Sunday around 12:42 p.m. at Hammonasset Beach State Park.
Fire Chief Bobby Kyttle said upon arrival he saw a dog in the water drowning in a culvert under a bridge near Beach Road and S Street in the park campgrounds. The tide was above normal, the current was moving rapidly, and the dog's legs were stuck between the rocks.

Kyttle, the first on the scene, jumped into the water and was able to free the dog's legs from the rocks. Kyttle then guided him and carried him to the pavement. The rescue took about five minutes.
Kyttle said the dog was a shepard mix named Bear, about ten years old.

"We then put the dog on back of the rescue truck to warm him up and used towels to wipe him down," Kyttle said. "He was very friendly and happy we were helping him."
