Summer Reading Challenge and Programs for Teens at Scranton Library

The Scranton Library is pleased to announce this year's Summer Reading Challenge and programs for teens.
Reading Challenge: Sign up on our website www.scrantonlibrary.org/teens and click on the "Beneath the Surface" logo. Register to participate for the Reading Challenge. For every 300 minutes you read and record you will be eligible to move up a level and earn prizes and be entered into a weekly prize raffle. Registration begins June 17 and the challenge begins June 24. Programs: Sign up for all programs starting June 17 at www.scrantonlibrary.org/events
 Book discussions: Nutmeg book discussions will be Mondays in the summer from July 8-August 12. Middle school books will be discussed from 3-4, and high school books will be discussed from 4-5. Two books per week will be discussed, read one or both. For the schedule of titles please visit www.scrantonlibrary.org/events. General book discussions for teens meets the first Tuesday of the month from 7-8 pm. July 2 we will discuss City of Bones and August 6 we will discuss The Game. For both of these groups please see Katie in the Teen Department for a copy of the book.
Creative Writing: meet weekly with your peers to share work, critique work, and do fun writing exercises, and contribute to a group book project. Wednesdays July 10-August 14, 3:30-5:00.
Make & Take "Crafternoons": Teens join us in "Beneath the Surface related crafts Thursdays at 2:00 June 27-August 15:

  • July 25: Origami
  • August 1: Candy sushi & Duct Tape Designs

  • August 15: Design your own mug
Game On: Thursdays 3:30-5, June 27-August 15. Meet up with friends to play games such as Apples to Apples, Taboo, cards, and more. Feel free to bring your own games as well such as Magic the Gathering cards. Snacks provided.
Movie Matinees: Fridays at 2:00, join us for "Beneath the Surface" themed movies: July 5: The Hobbit July 12: Journey to the Center of the Earth July 19: Holes August 9: Jaws
Mutt-i-grees: a joint program with the Children's Department and the Mutt-i-grees Organization to raise awareness about shelter animals: Helping Hounds: meet weekly to bake dog biscuits and make blankets for local shelters, organize donation collections and more. Tuesdays 3:30-5. Mutt-i-buddies: Help Miss Jane run a story time and craft for children. Tuesdays at 2:00 July 16-August 13.(Applications and training are required for this program.  Volunteer Opportunities:
  • Reading Buddies: a reading enrichment program pairing up teens with students in K-3.
  • Teens & Tech: help senior citizens navigate technology.
Applications to volunteer for these programs can be found in the Teen Department or at www.scrantonlibrary.org/teens. Applications are due by June 21 in order to participate in the summer sessions.
