Fall Programs for Teens, Tweens, and Their Parents at the Scranton Library

The Scranton Library is pleased to announce the fall programs for teens & tweens (and some for parents!). Everything is FREE and unless otherwise noted open to Madison students in grades 5-12.

Unshelved-Teen Book Discussion: A book discussion group for teen readers. Meets the first Tuesday of the month in the Teen Department from 7-8 pm, snacks provided.

Please see Katie in the Teen Department for copies of the books. Open to students in 5-12 grade.

Creative Writing: Wednesdays September 19-November 14, 3:45-5:00 pm (light snacks provided). Students in grades 5-12 are invited to work in a collaborative environment on fun writing exercises, short stories, poems, character development, and more. Students will be able to submit a piece of writing that we will print in a book and make part of the library collection.

Reading Buddies: Reading Buddies is a reading enrichment program that pairs teen volunteers with students in grades K-3 to meet once a week to read together and play reading related games. The schedule is flexible and based upon your availability. Applications are due by September 12 to participate in the fall session.

Teen Advisory Group (TAG): The Teen Advisory Group is a group of students in grades 6-12 who meet regularly with the Teen Services Librarian to plan initiatives to promote the library and its services and to promote a positive image of teens in the Madison community. New members will be selected upon completion of a Teen Advisory Board Application. Criteria for selection include:

  • A desire to promote reading and library services
  • The ability to work cooperatively with people of various ages and backgrounds
  • A commitment to attend, and actively participate in, meetings on a regular basis.

TAG meets the 4th Tuesdays of every month from 6:30-7:30 pm in the Teen Department. The Fall meeting dates are: September 25, October 23, and November 27.

Finding Money for College: If you are concerned about the high cost of college and worry about how you are going to pay for it then you are invited to learn how thousands of families are able to send their children to private college without going broke. Even if you think you earn too much money to qualify for financial aid, there are secrets to the financial aid process that colleges do not want you to know. Please join us for a free informational session hosted by certified college planning specialist Martin Greatorex. This program is going to be held twice. It will be the same information at each session: Monday October 1 at 7pm or Tuesday October 9 at 7pm.

The Journey to College Starts Early: Laura Maniglia, owner and director of Handle Associates, LLC, will present: The Journey to College-Preparing Your Child for Success. Discover the answers to the following questions:

  • When should you begin the college search?
  • What is the real purpose of the PSAT?
  • What are the pros and cons of Advanced Placement courses?
  • What's the difference between Early Action vs. Early Decision?
  • What should I being doing with my middle school student?

Tuesdays October 16 at 7:00 pm. This program is free and open to all. Parents and students are encouraged to attend together.
