Experience Another Culture Through Food

How often do you step out of your family’s comfort zone and try a new food or restaurant?

With kids, it’s easy (and less stressful) to stick with the same tried-and-true meals and places we know will please our family’s appetite.

But consider visiting a new restaurant or two or 10 this summer. Make it a fun family adventure and learn about a new culture at the same time--go out for some ethnic eats!

You can make this as easy or complicated as you’d like, from simply visiting a local, “new” restaurant and trying a new food to making a game out of it to researching the food and surrounding culture either before or after visiting the restaurant and creating a scrapbook of your experiences.

You can even go as far as making a “Food Explorer Passport” for each of your kids to really make it exciting and educational (see the link for more information)!

Choose restaurants that are local or visit a nearby town you’ve yet to visit for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even just appetizers or dessert if you’re on a tight budget!

Who knows, you and your kids might discover some new favorite foods and be inspired to recreate the recipes at home!

Remember, it often takes many times of exposing your kids to new tastes for them to try and like new foods. Don’t give up! Picky eaters CAN turn into adventurous eaters!
