Madison Art Cinemas on Friday sent this email out to customers:

"We have been promoting The Artist to begin on Christmas weekend since before Thanksgiving.  Additionally, with a view toward the Christmas opening, we previewed The Artist to our Sunday Cinema Club on December 4th.  Further we have posted large standee graphics in our lobby at the distributor's behest.  Despite all of this, the distributor has chosen to go with a slower rollout of the film and has decided, as late as Monday December 18th, that they will withold the print for a later opening at the Madison Art Cinemas.   We are now hoping to begin The Artist on January 6th.  We apologize for having raised your expectations for a Christmas opening, but this is the first time in the 12 1/2 years since we opened that we have been subject to and powerless before such inconstancey.  We hope you can wait to see The Artist at this venue."
