What the #Hashtag

Yes, it's happening friends; hashtags are officially coming to a Facebook page near you.  The largest social media platform announced the new functionality yesterday in an effort to simplify user conversations.

Now, there is no need to fret.  We all have those FB friends who, along with their full coverage of what they had for breakfast, lunch and dinner, include a well-placed hashtag for good measure.  Heck, I'm guilty of it myself.  It's an occupational hazard.

That little #, once a smug symbol of our awesomeness of being well, you know, #1, is now being used all willy-nilly throughout Facebook as a sarcastic pun.  And, I agree, it can be #annoying.

The good news is that you can use hashtags to start, follow and engage in conversations throughout multiple platforms. Hashtags will be clickable and searchable little nuggets which will enrich your social media experience.

So whether it's an election, tv show, big game or any other experience/event you can think of; using the designated hashtag allows you to meet and connect with like-minded people.  Think #gameofthrones, #puppies, #bruins or one of my favorites, #tranquilityproject.

From a small business standpoint, this techie shorthand is marketing gold if used properly as part of your overall marketing plan.  It's a great way to get creative and engage with your customers!   (I will dive much deeper into hashtags during the Get Social Seminar on Thursday, June 27th.  Email me at Heather.Caulkins@Patch.com if you are interested in further information)

So ready or not, hashtags are coming!  #buckleup
