WRITING THE PERSONAL ESSAY with Jocelyn Ruggiero

WRITING THE PERSONAL ESSAY with Jocelyn Ruggiero

Vista Arts Center in partnership with the Scranton Library offers this writing class.
Students will learn the steps necessary to write a personal essay, using sense memory exercises to sharpen skills of recollection and observation. The goal: to create an authentic & powerful story in your own words that begins with a cinematic scene to “pull in” the reader. You will learn methods to capture your natural speaking voice when you write, and explore variations on the standard “beginning, middle, end” chronological structure. We will practice using “chapter headings” as a guide to outline and write your story- and examine metaphor as a storytelling tool. Participants will each ultimately write a 600-700 word essay inspired by a particular event in their lives. This class will involve short homework assignments.  To be held at the Scranton Memorial  Library.
