What's your favorite Madison nonprofit?

GreatNonprofits.org released today its first ever list of top-rated charities in Madison, which Patch.com readers can use to discover top volunteer, giving, and internship opportunities.

Palo Alto, Calif. – Interested in volunteering, giving or interning with a great local charity? GreatNonprofits.org released today its first consolidated list of user-reviewed non-profits in Madison, which Patch.com readers can use to discover top-rated charities to give or work with on issues they care about.

“Local giving and volunteering has exploded in recent years,” says Perla Ni, the CEO of GreatNonprofits, which published the list. GreatNonprofits is the leading site for non-profit reviews by volunteers, donors, and clients alike. “Like Shop local, eat local, people now want to get involved with local nonprofits. People are increasingly interested in making meaningful connections in their own neighborhoods and communities.”

Check out this list to find a great non-profit around Madison.

This list only contains charities within 10 miles of Madison, but you can expand it to include non-profits up to 50 miles away, or you can sort through them by issue and user rating. If your favorite charity is missing from the list, you can create a page for it on GreatNonprofits.org. Then you can write and post a review about it, helping others discover the organization and contribute to this great community resource.  Not only does this provide useful feedback for non-profits, which they can use for self-assessment and improvement, but it serves as compelling evidence about their work, which they can show to donors.

It is also a great way to find out about volunteer, internship, and job opportunities at local charities.

“It’s so rewarding for people to discover on-the-ground, maybe lesser-known non-profits doing great work in their own communities,” said Ni. “Getting involved, volunteering or interning with local charities can be a terrific experience, because non-profits need and appreciate the help. You can get substantive responsibilities and hone real-world skills. And you'll be able to make a difference and see it in your own community!"

The full list over 1 million non-profits, which users can explore using zip code, issue, and rating filters, is available at http://greatnonprofits.org/.

I have been a volunteer for almost two years with the Friends of Hammonasset. I started as a docent helping with the Nature Center education programs and now help with fund raising. It's a great group of people doing great things for the park, for the environment and for natural resource education.

ACT II is a terrific non-profit thrift store that helps support the Madison branch of the program A Better Chance (ABC). The program accepts qualified and dedicated young men from inner-cities who are housed and educated in Madison while attending Hand High school.

ACT II Thrift Store and the Friends of Hammonassett get star billing for the great work that they do on a volunteer basis. I have met some of the ABC students over the years and I have heard for a long time that these young men really do "pay it forward." Great program. Friends of Hammo were major contributors to the Nature Center and that is only one example of their good work. I hope that a Board member from these two groups will leave expanded comments here.

I would like to add Madison Community Services, Inc. Food Pantry as an important nonprofit in Madison. The pantry has a tremendous group of volunteers which help provide food to the needy in Madison. The pantry serves between 85 - 90 clients on a weekly basis (almost 300 people a week) and has a Homebound Program for people who are unable to come to the pantry.

Friends of Hammonasset is my favorite. They have been around since 1999 with the mission to enrich the experience of Hammonasset Beach State Park. I had seen their logo around and been to some presentations that they sponsored but didn't know much more until I became actively involved. That happened a few years ago when I proposed a Mater Gardener project in the Park to complete my certification requirements and also starting volunteering in the Butterfly Garden at Meigs Point. This group does so much! ... and they are so humble about it. From trail maintenance projects, to presentations (check out this month's Schumann series), sponsoring plantings, etc.... Check out Hammonasset.org for more info on all they do. Go Friends!

No favorite -- they are all NEEDED. Friends fills a need to educate our young (and old) and protect our (one and only) environment, Madison Community Services (Food Pantry) gives back to those who have tough sledding right now, and our Library Friends keeps our friends (books) close by when we need a bit of quiet time. Nothing makes one feel better than time spent with one of these groups!!
