Winter Weather Advisory In Effect From Noon Wednesday To 10 a.m. Thursday

Advisory in effect for North Madison, and northern parts of southern Connecticut; As of early Wednesday, forecast for shoreline is a little bit of snow and lots of rain, but that could shift.

National Weather Service forecasters say that a tricky weather pattern is moving in to the region Wednesday and Wednesday night, as a low pressure system moves out towards us from the middle of the country.

The northern parts of the state could experience both snow and sleet, the NWS says. An earlier winter storm watch has been changed to a winter weather advisory, with about two to three inches of snow and sleet accumulation expected for interior portions of the state. There may be trace amounts of ice from freezing rain, but slightly warmer temperatures than previously forecast have lowered the snow amounts by one to two inches as of late Tuesday, the NWS says.

"At this time, it appears that metro New Jersey, Long Island and New York City will generally see a rain event," the NWS says. "However, some frozen precipitation could mix in with the rain at the onset and again as temperatures cool a bit in the night" Wednesday.

A winter weather advisory remained in effect for North Madison, Killingworth, and areas north as of late Tuesday.

"Snow should develop late Wednesday morning into Wednesday afternoon across the advisory area from west to east," the NWS says. "The snow will mix with sleet. In addition, there may be some pockets of freezing rain Wednesday afternoon and evening. This wintry mix is expected Wednesday night before the precipitation changes over to rain Thursday morning."

The NWS says the combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain could make travel dangerous Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning. "A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet, or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties," the NWS says. "Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities. And use caution with driving."
