Snow accumulations of two to four inches are expected Wednesday night through Thursday. An additional one to three inches possible Thursday night and Friday.

The National Weather Service in Upton, NY has issued a winter weather advisory for snow, in effect from 6 p.m. Wednesday through 6 p.m Thursday for southern central and southwestern Connecticut, along with portions of Long Island, New York and New Jersey.

Wet snow is expected with accumulations of two to four inches Wednesday night and an additional one to three inches possible Thursday night and Friday, the NWS said.

North winds of 20 to 30 mph are possible, with gusts of up to 40 mph. Temperatures are expected to be in the low- to mid30s.

"A mix of rain and snow is expected to develop [Wednesday] morning before changing over to all snow late this afternoon. Moderate snow is possible Wednesday night through Thursday morning with period of light to moderate snow Thursday afternoon through Friday morning," the NWS said. "Accumulations on roadways could lead to difficult traveling conditions Wednesday night through Thursday. The heavy, wet snow combined with strong winds could lead to downed tree branches, and power lines as well."

The NWS said to "be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving."

In addition to the winter weather advisory, the NWS has issued a wind advisory and a coastal flood advisory and watch. The coastal flood advisory will be in effect from 5 p.m. Wednesday afternoon to 8 p.m. Wednesday night. A coastal flood watch remains in effect Thursday morning for western and central Long Island Sound, and the North Shore of Long Island.

Tidal departures of between 2.5 and 3.5 feet above astronomical tides are expected. Beach erosion is possible, and breaking waves of two to five feet will "locally enhance inundation," the NWS said, during times of high tide Wednesday evening and again Thursday morning.

High tide Wednesday was 5:35 a.m. and will be again at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday night. Low tide will be at 12:01 p.m. High tide on Thursday will be at 6:42 a.m. and 7:18 p.m.  Low tide on Thursday will be at 12:22 a.m. and 1:04 p.m.

"While most locations will experience minor flooding, there may be localized moderate flooding in some of the most vulnerable shore roads and or basements due the height of the storm tide or wave splashover," the NWS said. "The majority of roads should remain passable with only isolated closures."

Coastal residents should "be alert for later statements and warnings, and take action to protect property," the NWS said.
