High Winds Buffet Shoreline Friday [Videos]

With gusts as high as 50 miles per hour through Friday night reminded some of Tropical Storm Irene. Check out the videos from Ed and Connor, and the picture from Jack.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory through midnight Friday, warning of high and gusty winds that could down tree limbs and branches, cause isolated power outages, and make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles.

Along the shoreline Friday morning and early afternoon, the high winds buffeted beaches, homes, and seawalls, including those still under construction after being destroyed by Tropical Storm Irene. There was some isolated flooding near marshy areas as high tide approached. High tide was at 1:33 p.m. Friday.

"The wind advisory remains in effect until midnight tonight," the National Weather Service said Friday. "Hazards include strong and gusty winds [expected to be] southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph ... through this evening. Impacts [could include] downed tree limbs and branches, possibly weakened trees, causing isolated power outages."

The NWS said a wind advisory is issued when there are sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph, or gusts of 46 to 57 mph, expected or occuring. "Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles, use extra caution," the NWS said.

“After talking with my emergency management officials and assessing the situation, we will be partially activating the EOC at noon today,” Malloy said Friday. “This will allow us to quickly respond to and coordinate any problems that may arise as a result of today’s high winds.”
