Maybe you have a New Year's Eve or end-of-the-year party to attend, or a business meeting with people you consider friends. Or maybe you know someone who's having a tough time and you want to stop by with something to cheer them up.
Stop by the at 129 Samson Rock Drive in Madison, right across from the Stop and Shop, and see what they have in stock. I did that recently and was taken with some gorgeous long stemmed artichokes. For someone who loves food, this is a great gift, even better than long stemmed roses. Owner Fawn Nebinger saw me staring at them and offered to let me try a bit of one. They had a delicate, nutty taste, finished with garlic and a light olive oil. They were perfect.
I had a party to go to, and Fawn had a little bit of time of time free, so she offered to make up a platter that include the artichokes, some marinated vegetables, an olive mixture, and some delicious aged Parmesan cheese. She then put some herbs around the edges to finish it off. She's not always able to do this at the last minute, so it's best to call ahead for a platter, but if she is able to, she will accomodate you if you forgot to plan ahead.
She even has platters available, and will loan them to you for a small deposit.
The work of art created by Fawn, complete with some Italian bread from Judie's bakery, cost about $33.00. I didn't add proscuitto this time, but that would have been about $8 more. I took them to a neighborhood party and it was a big hit, especially the artichokes.
Then, head up the alley and around the corner to the at 734 Boston Post Road. Let the folks there know what is on your platter, and what your price range is, and they will find you the perfect wine to go with your platter. Voila, the makings of an instant party. You just add the people.
