Accident Occurred On I-95 South Between Exits 62 and 61 Around 11:24 a.m

State Police at Troop F in Westbrook say Richard Casey, 58, of 31 Cow Pen Hill Road in Killingworth, CT was struck on I-95 Southbound around 11:24 a.m. Casey was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital where he later died, state police say.

The accident occurred on I-95 Southbound about two-tenths of a mile north of Exit 61 in Madison. State Police are asking that anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has any information to please call 860-399-2100.

State Police Sgt. Sal Calvo, who investigated the accident said it is not clear yet what happened, but it may be that Casey's car was disabled and that he was outside the vehicle when the accident occurred. Casey was walking when he got hit by a tractor trailer. "It appears he may have crossed in to traffic in the right lane in front of the tractor trailer unit, but it is still under investigation," Calvo said.

Calvo said the tractor-trailer that hit Casey is in police custody and that they will be examining both it and Casey's car to determine what happened.

Casey was hit by a tractor trailer driven by Claude McNeill, 54, of 18452 Route 2 in Brookfield, Canada, who merged into the left lane in an effort to avoid Casey, the police report says. McNeill was driving a tractor trailer owned by Seafood Express Pei Ltd, according to the police report.

The police report says "Vehicle #1 [driven by McNeill] was traveling I-95 south in the right lane between the Madison Rest Area and exit 61 in the town of Madison. The pedestrian/victim was outside in front of his vehicle, which was parked on the right shoulder.  The pedestrian/victim then crossed into the right lane toward the center lane. Vehicle #1 then merged to the left in an attempt to avoid the pedestrian/victim. The pedestrian/victim was then struck near the left lane and subsequently transported to Yale New [Haven] Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. No enforcement has been taken at this time and the investigation is still active."

The accident closed one lane for several hours and caused a traffic back up for several hours.
