Madison Photographer To Donate Percentage Of Revenue To Japanese, Pacific Rim Relief Efforts

He Picks Red Cross, "Known For Its Efficiency In Deploying Quickly, Willingness To Go Anywhere ... That Tragedy Strikes"

A longtime Madison resident and Daniel Hand graduate, now living in Honolulu and a professional photographer, was so touched by the plight of survivors of the recent earthquake in Japan, that he will donate 20 percent of his sales for the next month to the American Red Cross-Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami effort.

Zachary Purcell, who lived in Madison until August and graduated from Daniel Hand High School in 2005  is now owner and sole photographer at Zach Purcell Photography. He said in a prepared release that he selected the Red Cross as the recipient of his donation because of that organization's reputation and willingness to earmark money for relief throughout the Pacific rim.

"The Red Cross is known for its efficiency in deploying quickly and its willingness to go anywhere in the world that tragedy strikes," Purcell said. "Rather than reinvent the wheel, I figured it made sense to let them do what they do best and contribute what I can. I'm happy to do my part in response to an incredibly sad situation, and the early response from my customers seems to be that they're looking to help out as well. We're realistic enough to know that we can't make all the pain and suffering go away, but if we can bring some measure of relief in Japan and throughout Asia it will have been worth it."

Purcell shoots still photos throughout Oahu, including Honolulu and the north shore, and Maui, focusing largely on nature, landscapes and cityscapes. He discovered a passion for photography while at Daniel Hand, where he took his first photography class, when he began shooting with a Nikon FM3 owned by his mother, a Madison resident who is also a trained photographer.
