Watch Out For Slippery Conditions On Morning Commute

State Police, Branford Police, state Department of Transportation reporting accidents due to slick roads.

 

The National Weather Service says that there could be wintry weather late Monday and early Tuesday in North Madison and Durham. The south end of Madison and Clinton may see a mix of rain and snow later this week, the National Weather Service says. Either way, it's clear that this week will be marked by chilly, wet weather.

The Branford police and fire departments reported a four-car accident on Snake Hill Road just before 10 p.m. Monday night. Two vehicles hit head–on and a third vehicle side-swiped the cars and then continued downhill. A fourth car hit the two vehicles involved in the head-on sending them into the guardrail where all three finally came to a stop, reported Branford Deputy Chief Bill Pepe. was called in for mutual aid.

Weather is believed to be a factor in the incident. The state Department of Transportation shut down Snake Hill from Brookwood Road to Route 80 in North Branford until plows can sand the area.

The Connecticut State Police in Montville also reported a series of accidents overnight. "We cleared it up at 1 .a.m. from a bunch of accidents," the dispatcher said this morning, "and it's starting again because people are going to work. People are driving too fast." He said the roads are slick. "DOT did a good job clearing it," he said, "but there’s a slippery coat."

The state Department of Transportation also reported several accidents overnight, including a tractor trailer accident on I-95 in New Haven at 12:19 a.m. Tuesday, and another accident at 2:30 a.m. WFSB is reporting that Route 77 in Guilford will be closed until Tuesday afternoon after an early morning accident there.

Forecast for North Madison, Durham, and surrounding towns is as follows:

"A winter weather advisory remains in effect from 9 p.m. this evening to 10 a.m. Tuesday for ... interior southern Connecticut," the National Weather Service says. "Hazard types include freezing rain, sleet and snow. Accumulations could be up to one inch of snow and a glaze of ice ... tonight into Tuesday morning. [There could be] areas of slippery driving and walking, especially on untreated roadways and sidewalks. Motorists need to use caution when driving on bridges and overpasses, where icy spots can easily develop." 

Tuesday: Rain and sleet, becoming all rain after 9am. High near 43. Southwest wind around 8 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tuesday Night: A chance of showers, mainly before 8pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 32. West wind between 8 and 11 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 37. Northwest wind between 13 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 14. North wind between 6 and 9 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 32.

Thursday Night: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 24. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 32.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22.

Saturday: A chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 36. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tonight: Rain, mainly after 2am. Low around 33. Southwest wind between 13 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Tuesday: Rain. High near 46. West wind between 9 and 11 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night: A chance of showers, mainly before 8pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 36. Breezy, with a west wind between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 39. Northwest wind between 13 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 17. North wind between 7 and 9 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 35.

Thursday Night: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 25. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
