"It's Absolutely Ripping Snow ... "

Accidents reported on I-95 from Guilford to Greenwich; Winter weather advisory in effect for region until 6 pm. Saturday, National Weather Service says.

 

Ryan Hanrahan, the meteorologist at NBC Connecticut/WVIT, reports on Twitter that driving conditions just north of the shoreline are bad and getting worse.

"It's absolutely ripping snow just north of 95 along the Merritt east toward No. Branford, Guilford, Chester, Lyme," he reported around 9:40 a.m. Saturday. To get additional updates from Ryan, follow him on Twitter.

The state Department of Transportation has reported accidents Saturday morning on major highways in Guilford, Greenwich, New Milford, West Haven, Hartford, and Wethersfield. The state police are reporting about 80 accidents statewide, but nothing serious so far, according to a story in The Hartford Courant.

The National Weather Service says that the winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday for south central and southeast Connecticut. The advisory is in effect for New Haven, New London, and Middlesex counties in Connecticut.

"Precipitation may end as a brief period of light freezing rain or freezing drizzle," the NWS says. "Accumulations could be up to four to six inches of snow. Any light freezing rain or freezing drizzle late today could also leave a very light glaze on untreated surfaces cleared of snow."

The NWS says snow is expected to continue into the afternoon, along with northeast winds of around 10 mph and temperatures in the lower to mid-20s. "Visibilities could be one half mile at times," the NWS said

"Snow will continue into the afternoon, then taper off later this afternoon," the NWS says. "Snowfall rates of up to one inch per hour are possible into the early afternoon. There will be travel difficulties due to slippery, snow-covered roads and limited visibilities ... use caution while driving."
