Heavy Traffic On I-95

Congestion on highway closes out holiday weekend

The Department of Transportation is reporting several areas of congestion on I-95 South.

The department reported congestion between exits 82 and 74 in East Lyme, a distance of about 3.2 miles, at 12:08 p.m. Congestion was also reported between exits 82 and 81A in Waterford, a distance of 2.3 miles, at 5:18 p.m. and between exits 92 and 91, a distance of 4.2 miles, at about the same time.

Two minor accidents were reported in Waterford and caused brief delays this afternoon. One occurred between exits 83 and 82 and closed the left lane, while a two-vehicle accident occured near exit 82A.

Mid-day congestion was also reported at exit 91 in Groton, but it cleared up soon after.

"It's the end of the holiday weekend," said a dispatcher with Troop E of the Connecticut State Police. "Traffic is always terrible."

A dispatcher with Troop F said there were minor accidents on the southbound highway at exits 64 and 61, but neither caused significant delays. He cautioned that traffic in the southbound lane is heavy.
