Heavy Rain Creates Some Localized Flooding

Coastal flood advisory in effect until 4 p.m. Thursday; Did you see some flooding around town? Upload your pictures ...

The National Weather Service predicted that strong winds, in combination with high astronomical tides, might cause minor to locally moderate coastal flooding with the high tide on Thursday, which occured in Madison around 12:32 a.m. And they did.

A coastal flood advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m., the NWS says. "A coastal flood advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore," the NWS said, adding that tidal departures could be two to two-and-a-half above astronomical tide levels.

Here are photos taken by Madison Deputy Emergency Management Director Ed Brunt of the beach and pier at , an area that was damaged during Tropical Storm Irene. "The tide is high, but there is very little wave or wind action to drive the water ashore," he said around 12:55 p.m., as he drove along the Madison shoreline inspecting the roads. He later found some flooding on Route 1 near Nathan's Lane, which often floods during storms. The water height around 1:30 p.m. was not high enough to stop traffic.
