Chatfield Hollow Among Five State Beaches That Remain Closed

Two others re-opened; Testing for contaminants continues

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) today announced that state park beaches at Mashamoquet Brook, Pomfret and the east end of Rocky Neck, East Lyme have re-opened – but that five state park beaches remain closed due to elevated levels of bacteria in the waters.

Nearby Chatfield Hollow, a favorite with many in North Madison, remains closed. The complete list of the five state park beaches that remain closed are:

Wharton Brook, Wallingford

New water samples for testing were taken today at the five beaches that remain closed and the results of these tests will be available tomorrow.  If these tests show the bacteria levels have receded, the beaches will be reopened.

Mashamoquet Brook and the east end of Rocky Neck had been closed earlier in the week but were reopened after retests showed the waters there were suitable for swimming.

DEEP conducts weekly water quality tests at 23 state park beaches from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
