A Yoga Technique You Can Do Without A Mat, At Your Desk, In The Kitchen, Or Even At Walmart (With Video)

It's Called Breathing. Think You Know How? If You Don't, You're Not Alone

Sometime between the time we are born and the age of five, most people forget how to breath, says Karen Gomez, a yoga instructor and wellness coach.

Gomez, who gave a presentation recently at the Madison Arts Barn as part of the event, said while we still do breath, we generally don't do it properly and so it takes a conscious decision on our part to do so. And that's where conscious breathing comes in.

She gave a short demonstration at the fashion show Sunday. The technique, explained in the video, involves moving the breath from the top of the chest so that it also involves the belly. Want to see perfect technique? Watch a little baby breath and you'll see his or her belly moving easily with every breath.

After guiding the group through a breathing exercise Sunday, Gomez asked the participants to take a moment to be in the present moment, to notice something they might not have before. "Notice yourself being a little calmer, a little bit more at peace," she said. "That's conscious breathing. It's easy to do. You don't need a mat. You don't need a yoga room. You can do it sitting at your kitchen table, your desk at work. It takes just a few minutes ... somewhere between the ages of zero and five we forget that. So we've got a lot of catching up to do."
