Daniel Hand Girls Repeat as Class M State Champions in Tennis
With Melissa Parker hitting the final winning shot of the day at the Yale outdoor courts, in another three set match, the Tigers ended the day and the season in dominating fashion.
Led by their senior Co-Captains Taylor Fay and Callie Swiggett, the 2012 Hand Girls tennis team rolled to a 7-0 victory over previously undefeated and No. 1 ranked East Lyme, to defend their title as State Champions. They ended the year with a 21-1 W/L record and incredible season match total of 136-18.
Not taking any chances after the previous day’s battle with North Haven in the semi-finals, all four singles players, No. 1 Taylor Fay, No. 2 Rachel Petrini, and No. 4 Megan Sosensky came out the gates strong and put away the opponents in straight sets. No. 3 Melissa Parker, in her own relentless style, was a three set winner.
The doubles groups once again proved their reputation as they easily put out any hope East Lyme had of coming out with a winning match. In straight sets No. 1 Claudia Lohn and Gabby Diotalevi, No. 2 Callie Swiggett and Nicole Cahill and No. 3 Alyssa Fleischman and Chloe Squitiero were all victorious on this championship day.
