List Of Top 100 Delinquent CT Taxpayers

The Wharf in Madison, CT is listed on the state's list of Top 100 delinquent taxpayers in Connecticut, according to the state Department of Revenue Services.

The list shows an entity called The Wharf owing $268,764.09. Information posted by the Commercial Recording Division of the Secretary of State's Office shows that the principals for The Wharf on the list is Elizabeth J. Cooney of Clinton, CT and Ben Haberman of Madison, CT. The listing is shown as active, that the entity was incorporated in 2000, and the last report year was 2007.  

The Madison Beach Hotel, which calls its restaurant The Wharf,  is currently owned by the Duques family of Madison. But a hotel spokesman says the debt is not, at all, associated with the Duques family. The Duques family owns the Madison Beach Hotel, but The Wharf is not a separate business entity from the hotel, it is merely the name of the restaurant. 

"That's not us," said Madison Beach Hotel General Manager John Mathers, of the delinquent tax bill. "That is an older entity that no longer exists and is not associated with current ownership." 

Mathers said the Duques family purchased the Madison Beach Hotel and The Wharf prior to 2009, when the hotel was torn down. It was then rebuilt. 

Mathers said the hotel started getting notices about the delinquent amount owed well over a year ago. The ownership of the hotel checked with their lawyers and with the state and determined it was not their obligation, he said. "We were concerned and looked into it, but we're not associated with it," he said. 

The Madison Beach Hotel, owned by the Duques family, is not on the state's list of current top 100 delinquent taxpayers.

A call into a family member associated with the former ownership of the hotel was not immediately returned Tuesday afternoon. We left a message and hope to hear back.

All of the figures are for delinquent sales and use tax owed to the state, except where noted parenthetically. The figures include penalty and interest, as well.
If the Top 100 taxpayers suddenly paid their past-due bills, it would bring $24,371,452.93 into the state's coffers:
