Madison Art Cinemas Closing For A Few Days To Prepare For The Future

Plus, a special movie on Sunday, and titles and times for this weekend and next week.

Madison Art Cinemas on Boston Post Road in Madison will be closing for a few days next week, to prepare for the future:

Sunday September 23, 2012 will be the last day that the Madison Art Cinemas will present its motion pictures in 35 mm format.  Earlier in the year we received notification (as did all exhibitors) from our major supplier-distributors that sometime in 2013 they will neither produce nor ship 35 mm film from which to project their titles.  This is an expensive conversion that will cause thousands of small independent screens to close within the next year-and-a-half.  Make no mistake.  This is an expensive conversion that will have us exceed the specs of what has been codified by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) and NATO (National Association of Theatre Owners) in a white paper called the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI).  We see it as an investment in the future of the theatre and the community.  Therefore, we have purchased state-of-the-art digital projectors, servers and cinema sound processors to that end.  Additionally we have installed a new climate control unit in the projection booth to maintain the new advanced hardware and software that can operate reliably within narrow and sensitive  temperature ranges.  While the DCI requires only Dolby 5.1 sound, we will provide Dolby 7.1 sound, for example, which will add two discrete rear channels to our array of speakers (12 channels all told).  Accordingly, we will close the Madison Art Cinemas for two days to accommodate the Digital Cinema conversion on Monday and Tuesday September 24th and 25th with a view to re-open on Wednesday September 26th as a fully digital state-of-the-art theatre.  We are grateful for the support of the Madison Art Cinemas by our clientele which come indeed from a 35 mile radius.  We need your support to continue more than ever.

STANDING SILENT

A Jewish community is scandalized when journalist Phil Jacobs uncovers a pattern of child sexual abuse at the hands of prominent rabbis.  Through a multiyear investigation, Jacobs confronts both the rabbinic establishment and his own painful past.  Recipient of a Sundance Documentary Filmmaker Grant, this taboo-breaking film recounts how a courageous reporter’s pen became his sword of justice.

SPEAK NO EVIL… UNLESS IT’S THE TRUTH!

A Q&A WITH Phil Jacobs and filmmaker Scott Rosenfelt will follow the screening, moderated by Rabbi Hesch Sommer, D. Min., of Jewish Family Services
