Address: 108 N. Main St., Deep River

Phone number: 860-526-4122; www.the-whistle-stop-cafe.com

Cuisine: The menu features breakfast and lunch dishes and daily specials with an inventive twist. Chef/owner Hedy Watrous, who ran a French restaurant in Key West before returning to Deep River, exhibits her creative streak every day with distinctive specials.

Price range: $2.95 to $10.75

Take out: With a smile.

Kid-friendly:  Children will love the non-stop action at this casual spot where breakfast is served until closing time at 2 p.m. Let them check out the “challenge” section of the café’s web site. Kids can print out a copy of the “Whistle Stop Eggs,” color them to their liking and enter in a contest for a free breakfast.

Why you should go right now: We like the friendly staff, the energy – Watrous is as good an entertainer as she is a cook – and the option of al fresco seating when the weather is nice. We also love the food. The Whistle Stop offers plain breakfast/lunch choices such as eggs, home fries and toast or a great burger in addition to more innovative dishes. Regulars look to the daily specials board for Watrous’s unique creations, especially her soups du jour, or for signature dishes on the menu. The cinnamon bun French toast is heavenly, while omelets and Eggs Benedict are embellished with the likes of shallots, crab meat and herbed goat cheese. One of our favorite lunch sandwiches is the Marasco Fiasco, a grilled Panini stuffed with eggplant, artichokes, sundried tomatoes, leeks and Swiss cheese.
